Farewell to the Rector
The Revd Canon Vanessa Herrick presided and preached as Rector at the 9.45am Parish Eucharist Service in Wimborne Minster for the last time on Sunday 30 July before moving onto her new appointment as Archdeacon of Harlow in the Diocese of Chelmsford. The Service was attended by members of the Minster and the Northern Villages congregations. The singing was led by the Alternative Choir with the Director of Music David Gostick on the organ.
At the end of the Service various presentations were made by the Churchwardens Francis Vine and De Ashton on behalf of the Minster Congregation, the Northern Villages, the Minster Governors and the Friends of Wimborne Minster. With the gift presented to the Rector and her husband the Revd David Herrick they intend to purchase some garden furniture, a table, six chairs and cushions and a parasol for use in their garden at their new home in Essex.
Peter Cook, Secretary of the Friends of Wimborne Minster in paying tribute to the Rector for the time she has been Chairman of the Friends announced that the Friends had proposed that Vanessa be appointed as a Vice President of the Friends.
The Rector expressed thanks to all those who had helped and supported her in the 5½ years she has been Rector of Wimborne Minster and more recently also of the Northern Villages. “We will miss you all”, she said before presenting to the Minster a 'Book of the Gospels' for use at the 9.45am Parish Eucharist and a new edition of the 'Book of Common Prayer' for use at the Sunday morning 8.00am Holy Communion Service.
Following the presentations a farewell lunch which had been ably prepared by Sheila Soper and her helpers was served with the final climax seeing the Rector cut a cake in the shape of a book, one side of which being a fruit cake the other a sponge. The wording on the top of the icing read: Vanessa and David…with love and thanks from all at Wimborne Minster and wishing you all the best for….your next chapter…It also incorporated walking boots in recognition of their love of walking and doves for Peace.
The Service for Vanessa’s Collation and Installation as Archdeacon of Harlow will be held in Chelmsford Cathedral on the afternoon of Sunday 24th September.
