Eco Bronze Award
An Award for the Minster
MEG (Minster Environment Group) is pleased to announce that the Minster has achieved the bronze Eco Church award.
Eco Church awards (under the umbrella of Arocha UK) have been set up to help churches to examine the way in which we care for God’s world in our worship and teaching; in how we look after our buildings and land; in how we engage with our local community and in global campaigns, and in the personal lifestyles of our congregation.
An online survey asks many questions in five different categories and each category has to score at least a bronze level to gain an award. When we first started on this survey about 2 years ago, we discovered that, although in most areas we were at bronze or silver level, the buildings and land section did not score enough for an award.
In the past we have twice achieved the old ‘EcoCongregation’ awards. But this one is tougher! The Minster is a grade 1 listed building and that makes some modern energy saving strategies impossible for the time being. However there have been small changes we can make and the Churchwardens and PCC have worked on these. For example, we have changed to a totally 'green' electricity tariff.
It would be great to achieve the silver level! The Minster is an old building but there are ways of making her ‘greener’. It is also up to us as individuals to look at our lifestyle and our care for creation as part of our Christian discipleship. Alison Francis
